A visit to the Solís Theater

A visit to Montevideo can not be complete without passing by the emblematic Solis Theater, the main stage artistic of the city and an emblem of the art in Uruguay.

It is located in front of the Central Independence Square, a short walk from the rambla and impacts even further when you come walking through the streets of the old town.

It is worthwhile to spend some time to enjoy any play in this theater full of history and stunning architecture where it has been (and still going) large number of national and international artists. The programming is very varied and for all budgets. In addition to the functions of theatre and dance are currently organized concerts, seminars, workshops and exhibitions, being the center of musical and cultural representations of the city of Montevideo.

If you dont want to see any play or concert, the Solís Theater offers guided tours. Visit to the interior of the theater is one of the musts in Montevideo, even if you have only one day in the city.

A bit of history

Opened in 1856 (although not finished completely until some 20 years later) the Solís Theater is one of the oldest in South America.

When it was built it was the tallest building in the city and the lantern at the top indicated when there was function with a lighted candle.

The name of the theatre, contrary to what many people think, has nothing to do with the Sun in the main facade on top of the letters. The name is actually a tribute to Juan Diaz of Solis, the first spanish navigator that explored the waters of the Río de La Plata.

The Solís Theater design has a strong European influence and neoclassic style. Both its facade with a portico with columns and the staircase at its feet and its interior spaces resemble the great Italian theatres.
