Puerto Madryn is one of the most important tourist destinations in Patagonia Argentina, for the family and full of activities. In this post we want to recommend some activities so that you know what to do in Puerto Madryn during winter.

What to do in Puerto Madryn during winter

  • Whale Watching

Since June the southern whale “Franca” is the protagonist of the Golfo Nuevo. Each year the animal reaches to the coast for the reproductive cycle.

There are two types of sighting of these cetaceans: embarked and coastal. On board you can marvel with the immensity of the ancestral species and the possibility of an untimely jump a few meters away. Whales are curious animals who will converge to showing its huge body through the clear water.

To book excursions in Puerto Madryn there are different agencies of travel recommended as for example Argentina Vision.

In the “Only whales” trip this agency leaves Puerto Madryn to Peninsula Valdes, declared a Unesco World Heritage. After approximately an hour’s drive you will reach to the picturesque Puerto Pirámides, the only population of Peninsula Valdés and the only site authorized to carry out the onboard watching.

Passengers can choose to navigate in the traditional mode on an open boat or live the fantastic experience of sailing in the Yellow Submarine to see whales under water.

Passengers lunch by its own in any of the restaurants that Puerto Pirámides has. The place offers a variety of options.

After lunch, they return to Puerto Madryn before passing through El Doradillo and Las Canteras beaches to watch the whales from the coast, having the possibility of seeing only at 10 metres.

This excursion is offered from June to November and has a duration estimated of 6 hours.

Recently it was opened a new tour called Zonotrikia which combines whale-watching with a gourmet picnic.

  • Enjoy the Gastronomy Festival “Madryn al Plato”

During the winter holidays takes place the festival “Madryn al Plato”, a different gastronomic proposal. The event runs until 31 July and in this edition the circuit is comprised of 32 restaurants, which adhered to the proposal to prepare a dish based on regional products (Lamb, prawns, sheep cheese) at a promotional price of AR $220 (with included cutlery).

  • Diving with sea lions

It is one of the favorite plans of tourists and although it can be made throughout the year in winter sea lions are still puppies and play with swimmers.

This activity is performed throughout the year in ten underwater parks and different shipwrecks of the Golfo Nuevo. Only 17 km/11 miles away from Puerto Madryn is Punta Loma, a rookery of Southern Sea lions.

Tourists embark and after a navigation of 20 minutes approximately is located the diving area. Once there only in high tide, snorkel or self-contained will interact with sea lions and enjoy a stunning experience by way of first-hand contact with one the most friendly marine animals. In the area there is a stable colony of more than 700 sea lions. The dive lasts 45 minutes, maximum time stipulated by the authorities of the reserve. You can also see wrecks.

You can make dives underwater baptism, as well as courses and various daily and nightly expeditions to see the flora and fauna. And for those who have no experience in diving or do not dare to the depth of the sea you can enjoy this tour snorkeling from the surface since the sea lions also swim there.

  • Other land and aquatic activities

Take a ride on the Regina Australe catamaran and enjoy the warm winter sun is another option. For those who prefer land-based activities, in Puerto Madryn you can also rent mountain bikes or go on excursions in 4 x 4.
