A new edition of the Via Crucis underwater, the only one in the world with underwater stations is celebrated in Puerto Madryn. The religious procession will be held on Friday, April 14, in the middle of Easter and it is expected this year to exceed 3,000 participants from last year.
Easter in Madryn: Via Crucis Underwater
Easter is a Christian religion tradition that commemorates the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. The Via Crucis underwater in Puerto Madryn, as well as the land, consists of different moments that Jesus lived from the time he was captured until his crucifixion and burial.
Via Crucis Underwater in Puerto Madryn procession will begin at 6 pm in ‘Parroquia Sagrado Corazón de Jesús”, opposite the “Plaza San Martín” and will travel through eight stations in different parts of the city until you reach the dock “Comandante Luis Piedra Buena”. There, the priest, the cross and the followers divers will remain underwater for six seasons while the rest of the Congregation, from the shore, kayaks, sailboats or small boats can participate from the surface.
A priest will tell the “way of the cross” from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean through a hydrophone. The underwater procession will end with the exit to the beach of the priest and the cross, where the public will wait next to a campfire singing and carrying candles.
This event, which began to be held in 2014 became a unique religious event around the world. The original guide of the Via Crucis underwater in Puerto Madryn was priest Juan Gabriel Arias, Godson of Pope Francisco and experienced scubadiver. After leaving on mission to Mozambique, was replaced by one of the most experienced divers from the city, Captain Pinino Orri.
