If you are traveling in Uruguay during the summer you can not miss the best festival of the country. The Carnival in Uruguay is considered to be the longest in the world, with approximately 35 days; since mid of January at the beginning of March. It is characterized by combining African with European traditions.
Carnival in Uruguay during the summer
The Carnival in Uruguay is characterized by the shows of murgas, comedians and parades that take place both in the “tablados” and in the “Teatro de Verano” (Rambla Wilson s/n, esq. Cachón) where they celebrated the official contest.
The murga shows are the most public convened during the Carnival. They are distinguished by their choral singing and rhythm. The murgas narrates the most important events of the year with sarcasm and irony of politicals and famous. The murga is recognized internationally and it is one of the most important cultural hallmarks of Uruguay.
Although the Uruguayan Carnival takes place during the summer and it has a special charm during these months it is also true that it manifests itself throughout the year in theaters or music halls with ropes of drums of candomble that play in the streets of all neighbourhoods of the city. We recommend also to understand many of these cultural manifestations and its importance in the country to make a visit to the Carnival Museum located in Montevideo.
